The Bark Scorpion is one of the many pests that are native to the state of Arizona. This scorpion delivers a painful and dangerous sting making them one of the most feared insects in the area. The bark scorpion can be identified by it two body parts and long whip-like tail. Usually Bark Scorpions grow to 2-3 inches long. They have 8 legs, a pair of pedipalps that are used for grabbing pray and are usually a light to medium brown color. You may also see them carrying their young on their back as seen in the picture to the left.
The bark scorpion can be found in a variety of places, mostly due to their ability to climb. Common places to find them are under rocks or in crevices, in trees or on high rock walls. They are also found inside people homes, often in damp or dark places link under sinks, in bathtubs, and in closets. Since Scorpions are nocturnal you are most likely to find them at night, or in very dark places. You can easily see them by using a black light.
Animals and Insects that Prey on Scorpions
Scorpions are food for many small animals and larger insects. Large centipedes, tarantulas, lizards, birds, bats, and mice all have been known to eat scorpions.
The Bark Scorpions sting is very painful and can be dangerous as well. Individuals that are stung can experience pain, a tingling sensation and numbness for 24-72 hours. The effected part may become temporarily immobilized and some people may experience convulsions a few minutes after the bite. Vomiting and general illness can last up to 3 days as well. Small children are the most a risk from these bites as they do not have sufficient defenses to reject the poison.
The antivenom for bark scorpion stings was developed by the Arizona State University and is produced in quantities sufficient to treat stings within the state of Arizona. Currently this antivenom is only available in select areas of the state.
