5 Common Spring-Time Pests to Watch Out for in Arizona

As the days get warmer and longer, Arizona residents can also expect to see seasonal animals and insects emerge. While the butterflies, baby animals, and bees buzzing from flower to flower are all welcome sights, there is perhaps a much longer list of pests we don’t want to welcome back into our lives.

When dusting off your hiking shoes, diving into yard work, and getting outside with the kids, keep your eyes peeled for pests in and around your home. The following five common springtime pests are certainly ones you don’t want to be dealing with an infestation of by summer!

5 Common Spring-Time Pests to Watch Out for in Arizona

Scorpions

Scorpions are synonymous with Arizona, and their presence can be pretty unsettling. While most species are relatively harmless, the bark scorpion is an exception, as its venomous sting can be dangerous to us and our pets.

To prevent scorpions from entering your home, seal any gaps or cracks in your home’s foundation, and remove piles of debris and wood from your yard. If you find one while doing yard work, you likely don’t need to panic (besides the initial shock!), but if you see more than a couple, it’s best to call in pest experts to ensure you’re not going to be overrun in a few weeks.

Cockroaches

Cockroaches are another common springtime pest in Arizona, and they often invade homes in search of food and water. While they do not sting or bite, their presence can lead to food contamination and allergic reactions.

Cockroaches are notoriously difficult to eliminate, so keeping your home clean and free of food debris is essential. If you notice signs of an infestation, such as feces, egg casings, or a musty odor, it’s crucial to address the issue ASAP.

Ants

Ants are one of Arizona’s most common household pests, and they can cause indoor and outdoor problems. Species like the carpenter ant can damage your home’s wood structures, while the red-imported fire ant delivers a painful sting.

Keep food tightly sealed and clean up spills immediately to prevent ants from invading your home. Seal any cracks or gaps around your home’s exterior to prevent entry.

If you notice an ant nest near your home, it may be best to call in pest professionals to deal with them, especially if they’re not a relatively harmless species.

Wasps

Wasps, including yellow jackets and hornets, are prevalent in Arizona and can build nests on your property. They can be aggressive and will sting if they feel threatened. Wasp stings can be excruciating and even cause severe allergic reactions in some individuals. To avoid a wasp infestation, regularly inspect your property for nests and remove any potential nesting sites, such as piles of debris or overgrown vegetation.

Note on Bees: Bees generally have a much more forgiving nature, but you should quickly address any nests in your yard. You can call Azex Pest Control, but if you believe they are honeybees, contact a local honeybee expert, as they can often take the hive away and give them a new home without harming them.

Spiders

Arizona has various spider species, including the venomous black widow and the brown recluse. While most spiders are harmless, these two species can deliver a dangerous bite that requires medical attention. To minimize the risk of spider infestations, keep your home clutter-free and seal any gaps around doors and windows. If you see more than one or two spiders of a single species, consider calling in pest control experts to check you’re not about to be overrun by all those legs.

Other Pests

While these are some of Arizona’s most common springtime pests, residents should also be vigilant for other unwanted visitors, such as termites, ticks, and fleas. Regularly inspect your property for signs of infestation, and take preventive measures to keep these pests at bay.
