How Termites Grow and How to Stop Them from Spreading

Termites tend to be in homeowners’ thoughts as a spring or summer concern, but here in Arizona, the termites’ activity may start sooner—and last longer. Understanding how termites grow and how they spread is the solution to preventing costly losses.

You don’t have to be an entomologist to save your home. You just need to know what to watch for and when to act.

What You Need to Know About the Termites’ Life Cycle

Termites don’t just appear overnight. Similar to other insects, they undergo many different stages, usually before you even see them.  This is because they breed and grow beneath the earth and in the walls of your home.

This is how it happens:

Queens and Eggs: Each termite colony is started by a queen, and her job is to give birth to tens of thousands of eggs. The queen will lay more than 30,000 eggs in one day for extremely large colonies, so after it’s all set up, the colony can quickly expand.

Small white larvae hatch from these eggs. They look very much like baby ants at this stage.

These baby termites, also called nymphs, will turn into one of three categories depending on the needs of the colony:

  • Workers: The wood-breakers. The termites chew through beams and insulation.
  • Soldiers: Biting with broad jaws and very little tolerance for outsiders.
  • Reproductives (Swarmers): Winged termites tasked with flying away and starting colonies elsewhere.

This entire growth process may take weeks to months, depending on weather, specifically heat and humidity.

Why Arizona Is Best Ground for Termites

You would think the desert habitat would frighten termites, but it has the opposite effect. Subterranean termites thrive in Arizona because of:

  • Mild winters, which enable them to remain active for longer
  • Irrigation systems that form just enough soil moisture to sustain a colony
  • Soil-penetrating entry points, especially in homes that have wood resting on the ground or cracked foundations

If you live in Phoenix, Prescott, or the surrounding communities, your home is likely already on their list, especially if you’ve never had a termite inspection.

Signs You May Already Have an Issue

Termites don’t warn us before snacking on our homes…but there are a few warning signs to look out for:

  • Mud tubes along the outside of your home’s foundation
  • Soft or hollow-sounding wood when knocked
  • Wing Ples near windows or doors (typically from swarmers)
  • Bubbling paint or pinholes in drywall

If you notice any of these, don’t delay. Damage can accumulate quickly, and do-it-yourself treatments typically miss the site of the colony.

What You Can Do to Prevent a Termite Infestation

Termite prevention isn’t rocket science, but it does take commitment. Here are the best steps to keep them at bay:

  1. Arrange a Termite Inspection (Once a Year!)

Regular professional visits trained in Arizona pest activity can identify early signs before damage occurs. AZEX professionals know what to look for and where.

  1. Seal Moisture Leaks

Fix leaky faucets, broken irrigation, and clogged gutters. Termites don’t need standing water, just enough moisture to soften wood or soil.

  1. Keep Wood Away from Your Home’s Foundation

Stack firewood and wood a minimum of 20 feet away, and never let it touch ground. Mow and remove shrubs from around the building, and maintain wood mulch at a safe distance.

  1. Seal Gaps and Cracks

Fill small concrete crevices, utility point gaps, and baseboard space with caulk or foam. They are highways for termite travel.

Termite Season in Arizona: Timing Is Everything

Whereas swarmers tend to emerge during late spring to early summer, activity can begin as early as March, especially with mild winters. Subterranean termites are active throughout the year but do most of their damage as temperatures rise and moisture is present.

June is a critical month to catch infestations early, before swarmer’s establish and colonies expand.
