Quick-Start Guide to Seasonal Insect Problems in Arizona

Here in Arizona, we don’t get a lot of bug “downtime” – they don’t disappear altogether in the winter, especially not if it’s a warm winter. In the summer, we’ve got all kinds of pests to keep an eye on, from those that hurt when they bite or sting to others that have their eyes set on damaging our property. So, what should we be on the lookout for? Read on for your quick-start guide to seasonal insect problems in Arizona.

Seasonal Tips for Arizona Pests

Termites

Termites are every homeowner’s worst nightmare – they chew their way in and won’t chew their way out until they’ve severely damaged your home. You need to be on the lookout for termites from November – February as this is seasonal time when they’ll be most active in the home.

Bees

Bees may send some people running and screaming, but they’re generally very docile creatures. Bees are happy to go about their business and will only sting if severely scared or if they believe their hive is being threatened. Bumblebees and carpenter bees can sting more than once, but honey bees usually die when they sting. If you have bees around your home, you only need to be concerned if there is a nest. You can call us if you’re having a problem, or if you know you have honey bees, you can often call a local honey producer who will come and capture the bees for you and take them away unharmed.

Rodents

Most people will only start to see rodents during the cooler months (October – March), especially roof rats, as our roofs are typically very hot places. Make sure you inspect your home for any entry points and fill them so they can’t get in. This goes for your garage and shed too.

Roaches

Roaches are again most active in winter, October – March, but you may find them at any time. Plugging access points into the house and keeping your home clean and clear of food debris (human or pet) is the best way to deter roaches.

Spiders and Scorpions

Spiders and scorpions will be most visible in the warm months, but it’s likely the cooler months that you’ll need to watch out for them. Like bees, they generally don’t want to get into an altercation with you, so make sure you check out any area they may be before you use it. For example, you may find a recluse spider hiding in your blankets when you get them out in the winter, or you may find a scorpion in a boot you left outside – just be vigilant and if you have an infestation, call us!

Ants

Ants are prevalent in summer and shouldn’t be a problem, provided they stay outside of the home and don’t infest your space. If ants find their way into your home or if they’re taking over your backyard, it’s likely time to get in the professionals to deal with them. While normal black ants won’t hurt, fire ants and other types will hurt, especially if you, a loved one, or a pet gets bitten multiple times.

Bed Bugs, Fleas & Lice

These three pests are all about you and/or your pets, and can get into your home at any time. They’ll often be most active in the summer, but will be present year-round. These pests will not go away on their own and you will need to use professional treatments to get rid of them.

How to Deter Seasonal Pests

There are a few universal things you should always keep in mind to protect yourself, your family, and your home from unnecessary run-ins with unwanted pests:

  • Don’t allow debris to build up against or around your home – this will invite pests close to the home (there’s nothing they like better than a pile of leaves or some leftover flooring) and from there they’ll quickly find their way inside.
  • Keep an eye on nooks and crannies and fill them when you find them.
  • Check doors and windows that they shut and seal properly and won’t allow a bug inside (this is also a good way to cut down on your energy use since your aircon won’t be escaping!).
  • Cut back bushes and trees that are too close to the house.
  • Don’t leave out food or running water – even a dripping tap can be an oasis for bugs and rodents when it’s hot, especially if it’s inside an accessible cool area.
  • Keep your trashcans away from the house.
  • Wash your clothes on a hot wash immediately when you get home from traveling (the same goes for pet bedding!).
