Termites – Detection and Extermination

Ecologically termites are important to nature.  In nature, termites breakdown wood for the surrounding ecosystem to recycle.  But when they enter your home they can be an expensive problem.  By familiarizing yourself with the signs of an infestation and knowing a few key tips you can prevent costly repairs with termite detection.

Termite Detection

Termite workers have a soft white body that easily dries out if exposed to air and sun light too long.  Because of their delicate body they tend to stay in the nest or underground.  They only venture out on warm, humid days.  If you see a white termite, you can bet that there is a nest close by.

Because termites need moisture the often construct mud tubes from the ground to their nest.  If their nest is in your home, this can cause mold problems due to the humidity that these tubes guide into the structure.  In fact, termites encourage mold to grow because it makes the wood easier to chew.  If you spot any of these mud tubes it is a sure sign of a termite nest. You should inspect the area closely and look for mold.

Another way to detect a termite nest is by spotting one of the winged “swarmers”.  These termites look a lot like a winged carpenter ant.  The easiest way to tell the difference between the two is by looking at the body and wing shape.  A flying ant will have a 3 distinct sections to their body, the head, thorax and abdomen.  The swarmer termite will have a more uniform width through their entire body.  You can also tell the difference by the shape of their antennae and wings.  The ant will have a more “kinked” antennae and two distinct wing sizes.  The termite has two wings that are the same length and straight antennae.

Termite Treatment

The most effective way to treat a termite problem is with professional termite treatment.  At AZEX Pest Solutions we use Termidor, a liquid insecticide that is applied with precision along the exterior perimeter of the structure.  Termidor binds to the soil to create a treatment zone that the termites can’t escape.

For treatment of dry wood termites, AZEX uses a heat treatment to permeate the wood and kill the bugs.  By heating the area to at least 130 degrees, the termites are killed without the use of chemicals.  This is a perfect option for those who want to limit their exposure to chemical treatments as well.

If you suspect that you have a termite nest, call in the professionals immediately.  AZEX Pest Solutions will come to your home or business to perform a free, no obligation inspection.  If we find anything we will provide you with a detailed diagram explaining where the termites are active on your property and the step-by-step method we will use to eradicate them.
